Steam Explosion
After the silphie plant has been harvested, the next step is to prepare the fibers. Thermal pressure hydrolysis, or steam explosion, prepares the fibers for the papermaking process without the use of chemicals, but with energy and a small amount of water. (See step 3)
Cascade use
The remaining plant residues from fiber processing are fed to biogas plants as a fermentation substrate and used to generate electricity, heat and gas. The fermentation residues produced after the biogas process are used as fertilizer on the fields. This closes the cycle and ensures optimum utilization of the silphia plant. (See step 7)
